"If the American experiment in democracy was ending, how would we know?"

Here's a list of 10 things that fascist dictators around the world have done in the past to set up their control structure:

1. identify a horrible enemy (drugs, terrorism, Al Queda, Osama bin Laden)

2. start a neverending war (war on drugs, war on terrorism)

3. build a ton of prisons (guantanemo bay, Wackenhut Corp. etc)

4. create a legal system geared toward filling them with the enemies (define protesters as terrorists via their threat to the state, etc)

5. create a state-sponsored private military which is above the law; confiscate citizens' weapons (see FEMA & "gun control")

6. create a massive internal surveillance system, infiltrate citizen protest groups (project ECHELON etc)

7. arbitrarily "detain" a few dissenters using the prison/ legal system above

8. target specific key dissenters and get them harassed, fired, etc

9. use the media to spread the agenda/ worldview of the new rules. Snuff a few journalists who tell the truth. (Dan Rather)

10. suspend of the rule of law.

In the US right now, during any national disaster or state of emergency the President can invoke martial law and bring the military in to keep "order", also forcibly to mobilize citizens into work camps, etc.

It's in the Patriot Act, WHICH WAS ALREADY WRITTEN BEFORE 911. THIS HAS ALL BEEN PLANNED, IT'S ONLY MADE TO LOOK LIKE AN ACCIDENT AND SUBSEQUENT RESPONSE!
